Catholic Charities Operation Helping Hands (5:10) MP3
[02/19/2008]
by: D. Jones
Joan Diaz, Project Director for Catholic Charities Operation Helping Hands New Orleans chapter discusses who they are and what they do as volunteers. CCOHH was originally started to help with Hurricane Relief focusing on the elderly and vulnerable. After about a year, they realized that the program needed to continue. CCOHH has now become a rebuild construction program, and they utilize the money people receive from insurance, Road Home, or donations. CCOHH has advocates to help people with their rebuilding effort, and they also are training volunteers to be “skilled,” which means that they learn a skill such as insulation, plumbing, flooring, or other construction jobs. In order to volunteer, she says, go to CCANO.org, and you can go to the Operation Helping Hands webpage to see how you can help. They offer stipends for some short or long term volunteers, and they are also housed and are provided with food while working in New Orleans. Volunteers, she says, have a tremendous impact in New Orleans.

by: D. Jones
Sister Katherine “Sissy” Corr, Executive Director of Notre Dame Mission Volunteer Program (founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1992), tells of the volunteers opportunities available for people interested in helping the disadvantaged. The main focus of the NDMVP is education, and volunteers are usually for one year. The volunteers, she says, go all over the United States and now into three other countries. Volunteers receive a small stipend while working with NDMVP and AmeriCorps (which they partnered with in 1995). Volunteers also receive an education grant at the end of their 11 months of service, and applicants can go to www.ndmva.org for more information.
