A historic vote took place today on an amendment that would ban federal agents from arresting cancer or AIDS patients being treated with marijuana in the ten states that have approved its medical use. Even though the amendment failed to pass, 152 members voted to suppport it, the first time such legislation has been considered in the US Congress.

An intramural basketball team at the University of Northern Colorado named their team "The Fighting Whites" last year in response to the continued stereotyping of Native Americans in sports. Charlene Teters, Vice President of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and The Media, explains how disrespectful the continued use of spiritual and cultural stereotypes are to the Native American community. Even though "The Fighting Whites" are trying to make two wrongs a right, their tactic was successful in raising awareness around our selective use of cultural stereotyping.

In light of the nineteen illegal immigrants recently found dead by suffocation in an abandoned trailer in Texas, the Immigration, Border Security and Claims Subcommittee held an oversight hearing to discuss the deadly consequences of illegal immigrant smuggling. While the US government pours tax dollars into trying to keep illegal immigrants out, 8 to 11 million are currently living on US soil, 40% of which came in by legal means. Guest worker programs seem to be a more logical answer.
