Whitney Hadanek is a junior at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, double majoring in Political Science and Communication. Whitney enjoys tennis, running, and playing the hammered dulcimer in her spare time. After graduation, she hopes to attend the University of Michigan Law School, focusing on Child and Family Advocacy.

Juliana Patsourakos is a junior English major at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. She is originally from Billerica, Massachusetts. Juliana is excited that her internship at Talk Radio News Service will give her hands-on experience in the field of journalism. In her spare time, Juliana enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, writing, swimming, and dancing.

Taylor Samuelson is a junior at UC Berkeley majoring in Mass Communications and Women's Studies, and is a member of Alpha Phi sorority. She has worked previously at commercial radio stations in the bay area and as an assignment editor for the San Francisco CBS affiliate KPIX. She enjoys playing and coaching lacrosse, hoping to eventually return to the Bay Area. She is in Washington D.C. to expand her understanding of journalism and news production.

Cathy Wemette is currently in her third year at Hope College, in Holland, Michigan. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, she is a double major in Political Science and Communications, with a minor in Business Management. After graduation, Cathy hopes to live on the East Coast, go on to graduate school, and pursue a career in public relations or marketing. In her spare time, Cathy enjoys running, reading, music, volunteering at a women's shelter, and spending time with friends and family.

Beth Boven currently attends Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Coming to Washington, DC has been a great experience for her, She says "I am away from the snow and the cold of Michigan. Also, I get to hang out with DC celebrities like Sen. John McCain, Ariel Sharon, and Walter Kronkite, to name a few. The White House has become a home away from home, spending my nights in a closet-like office, or riding along in the motorcade with the President on his way to dinner. I like to spend my free time reading the newspaper and looking at assignmenteditor.com to come up with fresh and exciting booking ideas for Talk Radio News."

Joangrace Gonzales is currently a senior at the University of California San Diego. She's majoring in Communications with a minor in Literature Writing. Megan Horton is a Junior at the University of California at SanDiego, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Visual Arts. Candice Pires
is currently a second year student at the University of Bristol, England, and is participating in a study abroad program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, majoring in political science and philosophy. She has previously worked for the British Parliament in Westminister as a researcher and adviser for John McDonnell, Member of Parliament, which she will continue this summer. Alongside her interest in politics, she is a keen traveller, avid reader and enjoys both playing and listening to music.

Kmele Foster is currently a Junior at the University of Maryland College Park double majoring in Government and Politics and Economics with a concentration in Information Technology Policy. Kmele has served as both a production assistant and web developer during his tenure at Talk Radio News. Kmele enjoyed his time at Talk Radio News so much that he has decide to stay on as the chief web developer. Kmele was also awarded a student fellowship with the Center for Democracy in technology for the summer of 2001, where he will be engaged in policy initiatives aimed at the Digital Divide, broadband penetration, internet privacy, and international information policies.

Interns from Fall 2000

Alexander K. Flipse graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, where he wrote for The Pulse, Lynn's student-run newspaper for three years. He was also involved with Lynn's student-run college radio station as well as the Drama Club.  Alex is interested in a career in investigative journalism but finds politics to be very fascinating. Alex is currently doing volunteer work for PBS, writing scripts for their pledge drives.

Orli Goldberg, originally from Toronto, Canada, is a full-time student at McGill University. She is finishing her year at American University and will then be heading back to Toronto to finish her schooling at McGill University.  In addition to journalism, Orli expresses herself through painting, cooking, and playing musical instruments. Orli is presently undecided on a career path; however, she hopes that her experiences in Washington will steer her in the right direction.

Aaron Goldstein, a junior at American University, is studying Broadcast Journalism. He currently is still a full-time student at American University in DC. He is also interning at WMAL radio, covering local news. Aaron currently works as the news director of American Television, the student run TV station of AU. He also took advantage of AU's World Capitals Program, by studying in Jerusalem. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Goldstein is an avid sports fan, with the Red Sox and Patriots as his favorite teams.  Goldstein also enjoys playing sports, such as Frisbee, basketball and baseball. After college he would like to pursue a career in either television or radio.

Angel Gore is a senior at Howard University majoring in Broadcast Journalism.  She is a freelance reporter for the Community News and works with Howard's TV station WHUT. Angel is also involved in student government  and is a member of the Spanish club. Angel will be graduating from Howard University in May, 2001 and is currently working with Dateline, NBC. After graduation, Angel will be studying in Mexico in order to improve her Spanish before going on to earn a Masters. Angel eventually wants to be an entertainment anchor.

Jennifer Habian is completing her bachelor's degree in Communications from John Carroll University, the Jesuit University in Cleveland, OH. She is an intern during Fall 2000, and will have earned her degree in December 2000. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, listening to Dave Matthews and the Rolling Stones, walking around the city and checking out the sights, and fine dining. Melissa Lum is a native of San Diego, California. She will be attending her last year at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she will graduate with a B.A. in Business Economics. Her career interests include sports, journalism, computers, investing, public relations, and entrepreneurial ventures.

Jeffrey Vincent Manderscheid is a senior at Millikin University, majoring in History with a minor in Economics. Jeffrey has had first hand experience in the political arena, running for the Naperville (Illinois) City Council in 1997. While at Millikin University, Jeffrey has become heavily involved with the sports department at the University radio station, including duty as one of the broadcasters for the Millikin University baseball, football women's basketball teams, and has broadcasted two NCAA Division III tournament games for WJMU. Jeffrey also has a keen interest in Computer Science. Last year, he served as the president of his University's chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery. In his spare time, Jeffrey enjoys reading, playing golf and working out. His favorite books are The Killer Angels, The Legend of Bagger Vance, The Long Walk To Freedom, and War And Peace.

Back for a second tour of duty with the Talk Radio News Service is Adam Sharon, formerly a fall 1998 intern, returning now to work full time as the White House correspondent for Talk Radio News Service and College Media News. Currently working with Ellen at Talk Radio News, enjoying all the time he spends trying to teach the new interns how to do things. He will be commencing graduate school in September 2001 at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. During his free time, Adam enjoys athletics, including jogging and baseball, novels dealing with American politics and the American presidency, and attending theatrical performances, especially Broadway plays and operas.

Virginia Shepherd is a graduating senior at Florida State University, from which she will receive a bachelor's degree in International Affairs. She is in Washington primarily to pursue her interest in the relationship between politics and the media, hoping to learn everything she can about both sectors. She currently has a job as a legal secretary, and mom as she takes care of her three month old daughter.  She enjoys art, theatre, tennis, travel and the Great Outdoors. She is considering law school in her future.

Dylan Smithis a student at the University of California-Santa Cruz, studying Politics and Journalism. A native of California, he enjoys the hiking, camping and backpacking available in the diverse ecosystems that California has to offer. Mr. Smith comes to Washington this fall to be in the hub of political action during the 2000 election and hopes to gain valuable "hands-on" experience in Political Journalism. After college, he intends to pursue a Law degree or Graduate Program, but not before traveling in South America and the Far East.

Michelle Austein is a summer 2000 intern originally from Gaithersburg, Maryland.  A sophomore at Northwestern University, she double majors in journalism and political science.  Michelle is involved with a number of campus activities including The Daily Northwestern (NU's student newspaper) and the country's largest student-run radio station.

Baggs is originally from Bakersfield California, attending school at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  He majors in political science, with emphasis in international relations and a minor in history.  He hopes to attend a high profile law school to study international law or intellectual property law, and ultimately to practice law and/or work as a foreign policy advisor.

Whitney Copp will graduate from the University of California at Santa Barbara this summer with a degree in Political Science and Business Economics.  A summer 2000 intern, she is originally from Oakdale, California, and enjoys skiing, horseback riding, and going to the theatre.  Her plans this fall include employment with Deloitte & Touche in Los Angeles and taking the CPA exam in November.  In the future, Whitney plans to attend law school and reside on the East Coast.

Andrea Fang is a Summer 2000 intern.  She was born in Westchester, New York and lived there for six years, before moving to Hong Kong.  Andrea currently attends Pomona College in southern California, where she majors in economics.  She is interested in a career in entertainment journalism or medicine but finds politics fascinating . Her hobbies include watching movies, following the entertainment industry and hanging out with friends.  Andrea interned this past winter at CNN in Hong Kong and will soon be working at the Investment Bank, Goldman Sachs in UCLA.

Jennifer Goodson is a summer 2000 intern from Wickliffe, Ohio.  She will be a junior at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH, majoring in broadcasting with a minor in dance.  Jennifer is extremely active on campus, serving as news director for WBWC 88.3 FM, staff writer and photographer for the school newspaper The Exponent, special event chairman for Campus Entertainment Productions, and Treasurer of Theta Alphi Phi, the national theatre honorary.  Jennifer enjoys being involved in the theatre, singing, dancing, bike riding, swimming, collecting cows and Tiggers, and laughing with friends.  She hopes to either have a career on stage or in broadcast journalism.

Rachel Henderson is a summer 2000 intern from Arlington, Virginia who has just completed her first year at Colorado State University.  She came to College Media News hoping that it would allow her to learn more about her hometown area of Washington, D.C. as well as introduce her to some new opportunities.

Jason Kaufman is a photojournalism major at the University of Florida, where he will be graduating at the end of this summer.  He has been a photographer for several different news and public relations organizations, including the Gainesville Sun and the Independant Florida Alligator.  He has also recently shot for Gainesville Fire Rescue.  He soon plans to attend law school, and hopes to return to Washington as a professional.

Alyssa Schloer is a rising senior at Hood College in Frederick, MD.  Originally from Silver Spring, MD, she is majoring in Communications.  Alyssa is the current Copy Editor and a staff reporter for her college newspaper, Hood Today.  She enjoys writing, singing, dancing and being with family and friends.  When she graduates, she hopes to pursue a career in the journalism field as an editor or staff writer.

Dan Seltzer, age 22, is a government major at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California. In addition to playing baseball and football in high school, as well as boxing while attending the University of California-Berkeley, one of his main extracurricular activities is following and being active in and scouting for thoroughbred horse racing.  Last year, he unsuccessfully attempted to get a group of clients to purchase an unknown 3 year-old colt named Charismatic, before that colt went on to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.  Charismatic's current value is estimated to be between $20,000,000 and $50,000,000. While he hopes to remain active in the thoroughbred industry, Dan plans to attend law school after his graduation in May, 2001.

Shannon Slatton, 21, is a senior at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where she majors in Communications/Mass Media.  She has worked as a producer at Henderson Television, where she earned the 2000 Producer of the Year award, and at KJEP/KWEW in Nashville, AR as host of the bimonthly program, Civic Pride. Shannon is a reporter for HSU's The Oracle, and the editor of The Reddie Teddy, a quarterly newsletter to alumnae of her local Alpha Xi Delta chapter. After graduation in May 2001, Shannon plans to pursue a master's degree in journalism.

Jeanene Timberlake  will be a third year student at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla this fall.  Originally from Springfield, VA, she is studying broadcast journalism with a concentration in radio broadcasting.  When she graduates, she hopes to work in public radio as either a reporter or as the host of her own program. She will be starting internship with National Public Radio (NPR) in June  This is Jeanene's second internship at the Talk Radio News Service; she also interned last summer at the Lexington Herald-Leader in Lexington, Kentucky.

Interns from Spring 2000

Marie Androv Broms is a winter 2000 intern from Sweden. She is an international language student with majors in Spanish and French. But she is currently part of the journalism program at Institute for Experiential Learning, in conjunction with Shanandoah University, in Washington, D.C. Previously she has been studying marketing and international economics at the University of Brighton, England. She preferably fills her leisure time going to museums, reading and writing.  Marie has since returned to Sweden and is finishing up her last semester in journalism school at Stockholm University.

Though he participated in graduation ceremonies last June at the University of California Santa Cruz, Rafi Frankel is finishing up his Economics and Journalism degrees in Washington, D.C. this quarter. While at UC Santa Cruz, Rafi was the Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning weekly newspaper City on a Hill Press and also picked up a couple individual awards for his writing. Playing basketball, body surfing, camping, and watching "The Simpsons" are among his hobbies, and like a true journalist, he is an avid news hound. Though he loves working in DC, and will remain here until June, Rafi plans to take off for a trip around the world some time in the next year, not knowing when he will return home…

Kari Kauper, a winter 2000 intern, is from San Diego, California. She is currently a junior at the University of California Santa Barbara. There she is studying business/economics with an emphasis in accounting. Kari is participating in the Washington Center Program during her ten-week stay in D.C. and hopes to pursue a career in journalism or broadcasting upon graduation. In her spare time she enjoys taking road trips and visiting with friends.

Gareth Schweitzer is a winter 2000 intern from Bethesda, Maryland. Gareth is participating in the Washington Semester Program at American University; he is concentrating on journalism. His home school is McGill University, in Montreal, Canada. Gareth is in his final year there, and studies history and political science. Shannon White is a winter 2000 intern for Talk Radio News Service. She is from Indianapolis, IN and attends Hanover College. Shannon is a Communication major with a political science minor and is currently participating in The Washington Center program, and will be graduating from school this May, heading to George Washingon’s Graduate School of Political Management next semester. . Shannon plans on having a career in the media and hopes that her internship with Talk Radio News Service will give her a clearer picture of the career that she wants. Min-Li Nancy Wu is a student in Alvernia College in Reading PA. Currently, she is an intern in talk Radio News Service. She likes to read, travel, talk and sleep. She is from Taiwan and has been living in America as an international student for eight years. She speaks Chinese, English, and Taiwanese. She lived in California for six years and Pennsylvnia for 2 and half years. This is her first year in Washington DC and she really like the city very much.

Charles Schlesinger
interned during the Spring of 1998. He now works with 6th grade special needs students in a city school district in New York.
